How much Playground do I need?

The scope of your playground project will be determined by several factors.

Children

• How many kids will be using the play equipment?


• How many at one time?


• What are the ages of the kids using the equipment?


• Do you have separate play areas for different age groups?

These are some of the questions that will need to be answered to select what’s best for your site.

Area

• How big is your area?


• Do you have more than one area that will need playground equipment?


• What are the dimensions of the area?


• Is there a height limit (i.e. inside a building, under a tree),


• Are there obstructions or items within the area around which we’ll need to plan (trees, poles, wires, fences, etc.)?


• Are there underground utilities or water lines that should be considered?

Shade or sun exposure is an important issue, especially in the south, where the sun and heat can be severe for much of the year. You may want to locate a play area in or near trees, in the shadow of a building, or consider purchasing shade covers and simply cover all or part of them. Determine the path of the sun, especially in the summer, and locate where the harshest heat will occur.

Also, existing or future improvements like sidewalks, drives, shade covers, water fountains, bathrooms, easements, vehicle access, benches and picnic tables should be discussed as well.

Budget

Of course, budgetary issues are at the heart of any project. It is essential to determine, as closely as possible, the available funds for the project.
